Lagos shuts Chinese company over workers death

One of the recent victims
The Lagos State Government has stopped the operation of a Chinese firm, Hongxing Steel Company, saying a visit to the firm confirmed reports that its Nigerian workers were going through hell.
This comes after the death of a casual worker ,Mr.Emeka Umoh.He died at the Lagos General Teaching Hospital following severe burns after liquefied iron spilled on him on September,23,2015.

Punch had earlier reported that two workers died and many others injured while working in the company.
They said people were injured and killed in the company on a regular basis due to absence of safety standards.
According to a statement on Thursday by the Head, Public Relations Unit of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lola Jagunmolu, the Lagos State Government said after investigating the allegations, it discovered that the Chinese firm had indeed violated safety standards, which led to the tragedies.

The statement by the LSSC said it discovered during a fact-finding tour that the working conditions of the workers were deplorable. It said the discoveries led to an order for the company to cease operations. The statement said,
“The Lagos State Safety Commission has put a stop-work order on Hongxing Steel Company Limited to stop operations for safety violations.
“The stop order was placed when the Director General, LSSC, Fouad Oki, and his team went on a fact-finding tour following the publication in The PUNCH of the death of one Emeka Umoh, a casual worker of the company.
“Speaking on the company’s premises in Amuwo Odofin, where a safety audit was conducted, Oki described the working conditions of the workers as deplorable, harsh and totally unacceptable, adding that there was very little safety measure put in place.”
It added that an official of the company, who accepted the stop-work order, promised that the firm would improve on its standards.
“Uche Eke, the Public Relations Manager of the company, said the seal order would serve as a wake-up call to the management of the company in the area of putting proper safety measures in place, while Jim, the company’s Safety Officer, promised to do step up in the area of safety.
“A member of staff, who preferred to remain anonymous, lamented that although the working condition was harsh, they subjected themselves to it because they had no alternative,” the statement added.

Photos & Videos: Everyone is talking about this Malawian 'Prophet' for 'Walking on Air'

A controversial Malawian born prophet living in South Africa, Shepherd Bushiri has released a footage he claims proves he can 'walk on air.'

The Christian preacher, who has 239,000 followers on Facebook and another 13,000 on Twitter, is part of the Enlightened Christian Gathering.

He has been mocked in the past for sensationally claiming he was head of a made up organisation called AFFRICI, that he can 'enter the spirit realm' and that God blessed him with a private jet - which no one is allowed to see.

After previously being labeled a fake, he invited cameras into his home to prove he can walk on air.

The footage starts with Bushiri - his arms held aloft - walking down the staircase in hishouse. As he is about to land, the camera quickly pans away to avoid filming one of the men who helped to suspend Bushiri in the air to make it look as though he was floating. But the footage catches the man's shadow as Bushiri's feet return to solid ground.

The video has been viewed more than 320,000 times after it was uploaded to YouTube by his followers, who said the 'hair-raising' performance had left the 'Christian world thunder-struck.'

According to SouthAfrican media, Bushiri told his followers:
If I can walk in the air, somebody thinks I can never capture a simple picture in the spirit. I know who I am and I understand the power of God and what that power can do. He is the God of impossibilities who can do anything.
We have seen magicians performing miracles, why can’t we, as children of God perform equally and even more great miracles? It's so unfortunate that some people are quick to believe in a magician's miracle than in God's miracle.
I'm not proving anything, am just showing you that God is able and he is performing miracles through his chosen ones. Attack a small miracle, I will pray to God that he makes me perform something even greater than what you have attacked. Its all possible because he leaves in me, am his temple.
About the miracle that you have seen me walking in the air is just a demonstration of God's power and when am done praying to God for perfection, I shall perform it live for everyone to see. Thats last friday when God showed me that I can do that after I had come from church.”

Decomposing Body of AAU Lecturer Found in a Forest

Dr. Paul  Erie, a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Services, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, who was kidnapped by gunmen in his country home 105 days ago has been found dead.

His decomposing body was Thursday exhumed in the forest between
Orhionmwon and Igueben local government areas where he was buried by his captors after he allegedly died in their hands.

The exhumation followed the arrest of some members of the gang who were believed to have abducted him when he visited his Igbanke community where he was a palace chief on June 16 and was never seen again.

It was also gathered that gathered not less than five persons had been arrested in connection with the crime including a member of the vigilante group simply know as “kill and go” in the community and was suspected to have been supplying the seven-man gang with bullets.

“The police leadership from Abudu and Igbanke led a team of policemen and members of the vigilante into the place where they buried him, but civilians were not allowed to follow them.

“They said the decomposing body of  Erie was exhumed from the spot. He was buried naked, they also found his SIM card and some other luggage believed to belong to some of their other victims in the grave they buried him. But we have not been told of how he died,” and eye witness from the community stated.

As at press time, the body and other exhibits of the late lecturer were being taken to the state police command headquarters in Benin City for further investigations.

According to THISDAY investigation, two suspects were said to have been picked up by the police in the area who were said to have later led the police to their camp in the bush bordering Orhionmwon and Igueben local governments.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Stephen Onwochei said he could not confirm the development but would find out and get back to the press.
Erie was said to have visited home on the fateful day “and he was exchanging pleasantries with his neighbours in Igbanke where he is a palace chief when dogs started barking in his house which is not fenced. He adduced the barking to a usual action of the dogs when the overhead water tank in his house is filled and immediately decided to go back to his house not knowing that his abductors were lurking in the premises.

He drove into the compound which is not fenced and they immediately pounced on him, took him into the house at gun point and went away with cash and some electronics. They took the person with him in the car and threw him into the booth while they took my friend away in their vehicle” a close friend related this to The Guardian then.

His abductors it was gathered, had opened talks with the family and first demanded for N30 million which they later reduced to N12 million but subsequently told the family members to  drop whatever they could raise at a spot and that their breadwinner would be released but he was never seen neither did the abductors contact anybody since then.

This kidnapping is getting out of hand oooh....And with Xmas lurking around the corner only God can save people now!

No Sentiments, Deal with the Corrupt Men, Women – Obasanjo

As Nigeria marked her 55th Independence Anniversary yesterday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that corruption must be kicked out of the country by all legitimate means.

The ex-President who spoke with journalists at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta said Nigerians irrespective of race, gender, age or religion must join in the fight against corruption.
“Fifty-five years in the life of a nation is comparatively young, growing and when you look at the life and history of those that you may call settled societies or reasonably mature countries, we are not doing too badly.

“They have had missteps just like we are having missteps; they have made mistakes and most of them have learnt from their mistakes”, he said.

Obasanjo re-echoed President Muhammadu Buhari’s speech that Nigeria has all the potentialities of a great nation.

“The president in his statement said Nigeria has the potentialities of a great nation. It is just a question of actualising our potentialities and that will require all hands on deck; men, women, Muslims, Christians, young and old, irrespective of our location, our tribe, our social standing, Nigeria needs all hands on deck,” he stated.

He warned that Nigeria should not be a resting place for corruption: “These are some of the things, and then of course, corruption must not have resting place within our society; we must kick corruption out because it destroys almost everything and I am not talking about corruption of money; corruption of attitude, nepotism, favouritism, they are corruption in different forms and all aspects of corruption must be kicked out of our society.”

Anger as conductor running from Naval officer is crushed to death by truck

Kirikiri area of Lagos, was yesterday, thrown into pandemonium, following attempt by a mob to lynch some naval personnel whom they accused causing of the death of a conductor attached to a truck driver.

According to Vanguard, the deceased was reportedly crushed by the truck he was attached to, while the driver, Ibrahim Salima, was reportedly running away from naval personnel stationed at the Kirikiri bridge, by Tokunbo car park road, to control the perennial gridlock.

There were, however, different accounts to how the tragedy happened. A version of the account, alleged that naval personnel stationed there usually collect N500 from truck drivers who wait on the queue to get petroleum products from jetties, daily.

However at about 9am yesterday, Salisu was said to have refused to part with the amount, an action that was taken as affront by the naval ratings. One of them was said to have chased the moving truck, in the process of which he allegedly dragged the motor boy, identified as Abass Kasali, out.

Unfortunately, Kasali reportedly fell right under the truck and was crushed by the moving truck.

Another version of the account, said when the truck driver sighted the naval rating approaching, he reportedly jumped into the truck started the ignition, with a view to vacate the illegal parking spot. In the process, the conductor followed suit, but reportedly missed his steps and fell right under the truck, causing the tyres to run over him.

A third version also had it that the truck had a break failure and in the driver’s bid to control it, it rammed into a commercial motorcyclist, killing him on the spot.

The incident reportedly sparked off a protest, as an angry mob reportedly descended on the naval rating. Some of his colleagues who were on their way to work reportedly stopped to rescue him from the angry mob. But they were reportedly overpowered.
It took the combined efforts of armed military men, including the Police to quell the situation.
Eye witnesses said: “The man was sitting down here (pointing to a position) when the tanker driver approached him to come and work with him, explaining that his real motor boy was ill. It was not up to two hours that we saw him struggling with a known naval personnel who usually comes around to collect N500 from all tanker drivers. By this time, the driver had veered off his lane in a bid to move. In the process, he hit a car with the number plate BX 941 ABC and a motorcycle with plate number KSF342 QE.“Along the line, the rating succeeded in dragging the motor boy down from the truck. Unfortunately, he fell and had his head crushed by the tyres of the truck and died instantly.“A mob held the naval personnel hostage and locked him inside a shop until the arrival of his colleagues who came and rescued him. Tanker drivers and their conductors started protesting the death of their member. But the Navy condoned off all routes leading to their barracks and shot sporadically to wade off the protesters.”
When Vanguard arrived the scene, blood stained as well as particles suspected to be the deceased’s skull were sighted on the spot. The incident worsened the traffic situation in the area, as vehicles remained stand still position for the better part of the day.

However, when this reporter attempted to take shots of the scene, some men in plain clothes who identified themselves as naval personnel apprehended this reporter. Her phone was seized, as she was whisked into a waiting van, to a place where some uniformed naval personnel were, with threat from some of them to beat her up. It took the intervention of some officers of the ranks of Lieutenants to free this reporter from the the ratings.

#OregonShooting Gunman kills 10, injures several in a community College in Oregon

A gunman who opened fire on students at Umpqua Community College in Oregon and has been identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer according to law enforcement sources
Kortney Moore, 18, told the News-Review she was in her Writing 115 class in Snyder Hall when a shot came through the window. Moore said she saw her teacher get shot in the head. The shooter then reportedly told the students to get on the ground before asking people to stand up and state their religion. He then began firing. If you said you were Christian, you got shot in the head, if you said you were a non-Christian, you got shot ion the leg.
'He appears to be an angry young man who was very filled with hate,' one source told The New York Times.  According to his profile on a dating site, Harper-Mercer is 'mixed race,' a 'conservative Republican,' and 'not religious.'
Harper-Mercer also wrote in a post in August how much he admired Vester Flanagan, the Roanoke shooter who killed a cameraman and newscaster at the station where he had been employed.
Moore said she was lying on the ground with people who had been shot.

As soon as the shooting started, students started to call 911, the police arrived almost immediately and engaged in a gun fight with the suspect and he ended up getting killed by the Police.
Mercer was said to have had 4 guns and lots of ammunition.
The shooting took place in classroom 15 in a building called Snyder, where English and writing classes are held, a student, Cassandra Welding, said.
Ms. Welding, 20, was in classroom 16 — next to the shooting — when the violence began.
She was working on a short class paper when she heard several loud bursts, like balloons popping.
There were about 20 people in the classroom. A woman seated behind her rose to shut the classroom door, she said, and was struck in the stomach by several bullets.
“He was just out there, hanging outside the door,” Ms. Welding said of the gunman, “and she slumped over, and I knew something wasn’t right. And they’re like, ‘She got shot, she got shot.’ And everyone is panicking.”
A friend of the injured woman dragged the woman into the room and began administering CPR, Ms. Welding said. Someone clicked the door shut. Someone shut off the lights, and the students huddled in the corner, blocking themselves with desks and backpacks. “I heard more shooting,” she said. “It was horrific.”
“My whole body was shaking, a chill was going down my spine. We called 911,” said Ms. Welding. “I was on the phone with my mom pretty much the entire time. I knew this could have been the last time I talked to her.”
John Hanlin, the Douglas County sheriff who appeared at two news conferences to provide updates on the victims and police investigation, was one of hundreds of sheriffs in 2013 who argued against new gun laws, according to Mother Jones.
“Gun control is NOT the answer to preventing heinous crimes like school shootings,” he wrote in the letter to Vice President Joseph R. Biden, dated January 15, 2013.
He said he agreed with the sheriff of Linn County, Ore., Tim Mueller, and included a quotation from him:
“In the wake of recent criminal events, politicians are attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims by advocating for laws that would prevent honest, law abiding Americans from possessing certain firearms and ammunition magazines. We are Americans. We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe upon the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws.”

Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley also released a statement on the shooting.
"I am absolutely heartbroken by today's news," Merkley said. "I have been in touch with local officials to express my deepest condolences and offer my assistance in any way possible and I will continue to monitor this tragedy and its response.
"The hearts and thoughts of all Oregonians are with the victims, their families and the entire UCC and Roseburg communities."
"It's extremely concerning and sad," said Endi Hartigan, spokeswoman for the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission".
Shortly after the shooting, President Obama addressed the nation demanding stronger gun laws, saying that the country has become 'numb' to these mass shootings.
A Mercy Health Medical Center doctor said in press conference, that 10 patients arrived at the hospital and three were transferred to PeaceHealth in Springfield.
Two of the patients were treated and four people went to the operating room with three of those patients stable now and one in critical condition.
One person died in the emergency room.
Of the three female victims at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, two were in serious condition and one in critical.

Gov. Brown’s spokeswoman Kristen Grainger confirmed that the shooter was a student at the school to ABC News.

The station KATU reported, citing a school official, that gunfire erupted at Snyder Hall located in the English building on campus, which is comprised of about 16 auxiliary buildings.
Authorities said that there doesn’t appear to be a link with international terrorism.

We won't rush to rescue Chibok girls -Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Military has said they are not in a hurry to rescue the abducted Chibok taken away in April 2014.
The Acting Director, Defence Information, Military Headquarters, Abuja, Col. Rabe Abubakar, who said this at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday, said the operation required demanded adequate patience and planning.
“The issue of the low morale of the Nigerian military men has now become a thing of the past. The operation to recover the Chibok girls is alive and still ongoing. We have continued to make rescue efforts, and we will do all within our powers to bring the girls.“However, we will not rush to do this. It requires diligent intervention and a high-level operation to rescue the girls. In due time, every captive of Boko Haram will be released. A lot of achievements have been recorded recently, and this cannot be disconnected from the high morale of the army.
“We want to assure our citizens that soon, insurgency will be a thing of the past. But, it is not only about the military or the North-Eastern region. It is our collective duty to ensure that there is peace in the country.
“The Nigerian army has put together a multilateral cooperation. Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon are partnering to ensure we win the terrorism war.”
