I use 5, not 6 vehicles in my convoy – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed yesterday said there are five vehicles in his convoy, not six as reported .
A statement by his press secretary, Joseph Mutah, said the minister he moves around in a convoy of five vehicles if moving with his aides and  four  without his aides.
Daily Trust reported that it saw the minister using six vehicles, four of which were Toyota Land cruiser SUVs and two Hilux vans in his convoy.
But the statement said
“the fact is that if the minister moves with his aides, who occupy one vehicle, he has a three-vehicle convoy plus two pilot vehicles. If he is without his aides, he has a two-vehicle convoy plus the two pilot  vehicles. The minister’s back-up vehicle is also used by the security details.”

Dasukigate: "Fayose Benefited From Arms Cash", APC Says

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has challenged Governor Ayo Fayose to say how much he got from the N1.4 billion allegedly collected from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) by a former minister for the June 21, 2014 governorship poll.

The APC claimed that part of the slush funds was used to rig the election in Fayose’s favour.

In a statement yesterday by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party said: “We are aware that Fayose at that time acquired a N750 million building in a choice area of Abuja from the proceeds of this fund.

“We are equally aware that Fayose submitted a bill of N30 billion to former President Goodluck Jonathan as the amount required to unseat former Governor Kayode Fayemi.

“A certain amount was approved for the project out of which soldiers, who were used to rig the election, were paid as well as electoral officials who released the soft copies of sensitive materials to Fayose.

“It was when a newspaper reported that N1.4billion was traced to a former minister to rig Ekiti and Osun elections, it was at the same time the said ex-minister ‘sneaked’ out of the country for ‘further education.’ Governor Fayose also travelled out about the same time.

“We are demanding that the governor should tell Ekiti people how much he received from the Armsgate money and the property he acquired with the fund.

We also call on the EFCC to beam its searchlight on Fayose to know how much is traceable to him and the governor of a  neighbouring state who coordinated the disbursements of the funds.”

The APC spokesman said the party was aware that the governor had become paranoid and jittery since the newspaper reported the amount traced to the former minister.

He added that all those who shared the arms money should be investigated and prosecuted.

Fayose has called on the international community to focus attention on human rights abuses and contempt for the rule of law in Nigeria.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said he was aware of the plot to muzzle him and others considered as non-conformists because of their opinion and critical stance on the President and his government.

Blind Woman who Predicted 9/11 Attack, ISIS and 2004 Tsunami has Chilling Vision for 2016

Baba Vanga, pictured below, is the blind Bulgarian mystic whose followers claim she predicted 9/11, the rise of Islamic State and the 2004 tsunami before dying in 1996.

And now Baba Vanga's chilling vision for 2016 is being revealed. According to MirrorUK, before her death at age 85 she predicted "a 2016 invasion by Muslim extremists" across Europe.

Vanga said that by the end of the year the continent would "cease to exist". More specifically, she said:
"[Extremists] would use chemical warfare against Europeans."
Dubbed the Nostradamus of the Balkans by her fans, the mystic also warned of climate change and the polar ice caps melting as far back as the 1950s, it is claimed.

Baba Vanga's prophecies which 'came true':

Global warming and the 2004 Tsunami : Predicted in the 1950s, the mystic reportedly claimed "cold regions will become warm … and volcanoes will awaken". She also allegedly warned of a "huge wave" which would "cover a big coast covered with people and towns, and everything will disappear beneath the water.”

9/11 Twin Towers terror attack : In 1989, Vanga reportedly warned the 'American brethren' would be attacked by "two steel birds". Some believe she was referencing two hijacked planes crashing into the World Trade Center.

Election of Barack Obama : The Bulgarian is credited with predicting that the 44th president of the United States would be African American. She also reportedly warned that he would be the "last US president".

And her followers believe she predicted the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami after warning of a "huge wave" that would descend on a "big coast, covering people and towns and [causing] everything to disappear under the water".

Arms scam: Dasuki begs Buhari

Embattled former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, yesterday pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to allow him enjoy the bail granted him by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Buhari said during his first presidential media chat on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Wednesday that Dasuki and Kanu could not be released because they would jump bail, describing the charges against them as serious.
Speaking with Daily Sun on the development yesterday, counsel to Dasuki, Alhaji Ahmed Raji (SAN), said:

“I would want to appeal to Mr. President to please allow my client to enjoy the bail that was granted to him. I want to beg him in the name of God. I cannot join words with the president. I have the greatest respect for him, both in his official and personal capacities. My appeal is just that I am begging him in the name of God to allow my client to enjoy his bail.”
But former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Prince Lanke Odogiyan  said Buhari’s stand was a manifestation of dictatorship.
The president’s refusal to release Dasuki and Kanu, he warned, was a slide into lawlessness. He urged the NBA, human rights organisations and other non-governmental groups to call the president to order to prevent the nation from sliding into anarchy.
“It’s disobedience of court order and if it’s not checked, it can lead to consequences beyond our imaginations.  It’s a manifestation of dictatorial tendencies and it should not be encouraged. The president must be advised by his legal handlers. If he is not satisfied with an order of court, the appropriate thing to do is to appeal. But he can’t disobey it, he can’t ignore it.
“The Nigerian Bar Association, NGOs and human rights bodies will speak with one voice to call Mr. President to order. We have to be careful so that we don’t slide into anarchy. No government should pick and choose what orders to obey.”
Chief Ladi Rotimi-Williams (SAN), however, said the president was acting in the overall interest of the nation.
“The president is at a vantage point to know what is good for the nation at any given time. Sambo Dasuki is a very powerful man and you don’t take such powerful men lightly.
“I am sure he (Buhari) has placed the interest of the nation over and above the interest of Sambo Dasuki, ditto for Kanu. He is not doing so because he doesn’t like their faces.”The interest of the nation overrides everything else.”

#DasukiGate -The Nation returns N9m compensation to NPAN

Just like the Sun Daily Newspapers ,Vintage press Limited has returned the N9 million it received as compensation for the seizure of copies The Nation and SportingLife in June, 2014.
In a statement yesterday, the organisation explained why it took the decision.
It said:
“We are again compelled to comment on the N9 million received by Vintage Press Limited as compensation from the government of ex- President Goodluck Jonathan through the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN)   for the seizure of our publications, The Nation andSportingLife in June, 2014

“We do this for two reasons. First, to restate the sequence of events that culminated in the payment , thereby debunking insinuations about the motive for the compensation. Second, to inform the public that the N9 million collected from  NPAN on behalf of the  Jonathan government has been returned to the association .
“This decision was arrived at on Wednesday by the Board and Management of Vintage Press Limited after a painstaking examination of the legal and moral issues arising from the compensation
“In our first comment published in the Saturday, December 12 edition of The Nation, we provided the background to the compensation. We recalled the mindless, illegal and unjustified seizure of thousands of copies of  both titles by soldiers in major cities and towns across the country.
“Not only were copies of both papers impounded, our vehicles and drivers were arrested and detained in military barracks. They were released very late, in some instances at 7pm,  when it was practically impossible to put the consignments in the market.  “We know of no other newspaper that was so harassed and maltreated by soldiers who claimed that they had intelligence reports that newspapers vehicles were to be used by insurgents to ferry arms.
“Our response to this unjustifiable infringement of our rights was go to court to  get justice and ask for Compensation. We briefed the legal firm of Femi Falana (SAN) to institute an action against the government and the military authorities and demand N300 million compensation.
“Soon after the clampdown, Jonathan hosted the NPAN in Lagos and the issue of compensation was raised with him. He promised to get back to the association through its president, Nduka Obaigbena, the publisher of Thisday. Obaigbena later briefed members that the government had agreed to pay N10 million to each newspaper. A mail followed from the association asking newspapers to submit their statements of claims for compensation.
“This development was discussed with our lawyer who advised that the N10 million compensation was reasonable, following which we  resolved to stay action on the suit .
“At subsequent meetings in Lagos and Abuja , NPAN assured members that the government had not changed its mind . At the Abuja meeting in March but year, the association resolved that N1million be paid by each newspaper on receipt of the N10 million towards the acquisition of a befitting corporate office for it.
“In May, the secretary of NPAN, Mr. Feyi Smith, brought a draft for N9 million to Vintage Press Limited.  The draft was accepted in good faith, believing it was from the account of the association and also from  the appropriate department of government.
“Who was in a better position to deliver a draft from NPAN to Vintage Press than the NPAN secretary? Vintage Press, like other newspapers that received drafts/cheques from the NPAN, did not know that the money was paid to a private company by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and from funds collected by that office specifically for the procurement of arms ?  This was until The Nation, in its edition of Friday, December 4, published details of the stupendous sums of money collected by individuals and organisations from the ONSA.
“Now, the source of the payment to us is beyond contention.  We now know it came from the ONSA and routed through a private company, General Hydrocarbon Limited. This company is unknown to NPAN. Facts in the public domain show clearly that the money the company collected was for ‘energy consultancy.’
That this company would collect the compensation on NPAN’s behalf was never disclosed to the association in line with corporate best practice. As a business that subscribes fully to the tenets of sound governance, we are not at ease with this revelation.
“We are also uncomfortable with the revelation that the compensation was from the money earmarked for the purchase of arms for troops fighting insurgency.
“This point was stated clearly in our editorial of Wednesday, December 23 in which we said: ‘it is unclear to what extent the extension of the anti- terror war was due to fraud – related factors. But it is clear enough that the war effort was deliberately hampered by fraudulent activities.”
“It is a shame,” we said further, “that there is even a possibility, however slim, that media players helped to create an enabling environment for terrorists, wittingly or unwittingly, by linkage with Dasuki.
“In the light of the foregoing, Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation and Sportinglife, on Wednesday resolved that the N9 million compensation be returned to the NPAN for onward delivery to the source of the money. A draft for N9million was handed over to Mr Smith today in Lagos.
“The Board and Management of Vintage Press have also resolved not to resume the legal action it asked the firm of Femi Falana (SAN) to initiate against the government and the military authorities but to regard the  losses incurred during the period as part of the sacrifice The Nation has made to the enthronement of a new order in our country.
“It was noted with satisfaction that no law of the land was breached in asking for compensation and receiving same from the government but that with the sordid disclosures about the ONSA, Vintage Press cannot in good conscience regard the compensation as a closed case on which nothing can be done.
“However,, we find most uncharitable the infantile claim that the compensation was meant to compromise us. We were highly critical of the Jonathan government for its incompetence as we would of any government that we judge to be incompetent. We remain committed to our mission as a newspaper and declare that no individual or body can dissuade us from this noble cause.”

Ambode Celebrates with Lagosians on New Year

I am very pleased to address you on the start of what promises to be a ground breaking year for the good people of Lagos State. The last seven months have been challenging, but with your patience, support and positive criticism, we have began to display a positive outlook on innovation and inclusion we promised during our campaign.

Lagos has always been a cosmopolitan potpourri of vibrant people that have driven the greatest growing economy in Africa. We however need the continued support of our citizens through regular payment of their taxes and strict adherence to their civic responsibilities.

Under my administration, the year 2016 holds great promise for all Lagosians through improved security, creation of job opportunities and greater attention to positive infrastructure development.

I have been lifted by the support and love shown to me and my government by well-meaning Lagosians and I am encouraged to redouble efforts to deliver the Lagos of our dreams.

I am aware that 2016 will also bring economic challenges due to pressures of dwindling revenue from the centre, but Lagos has always been resilient and must consolidate on its self-reliance to ensure it survives any inclement economic weather.

As I wish Lagosians the very best that this year will bring, I promise to rededicate myself to the social contract with the good people of Lagos State.

Once again, I wish you a happy and prosperous new year.
