Nigeria Police Recruitment: Two Websites Crash As Thousands Of Applicants Register

The fact that many Nigerian youths are jobless is a reality! Attempts by thousands of candidates to apply for enlistment into the Nigeria Police Force were frustrated on Friday as the two police portals for the recruitment crashed and were inaccessible for most part of the day.

The Police Service Commission had directed interested candidates to apply through its website, or that of the Nigeria Police Force, but the two websites crashed due to huge traffic.

Many youths could not apply online at different cyber cafés and had to go back home in frustration.

Several attempts to access the websites between 2pm and 6pm were abortive as the PSC website simply said, “This Account has been suspended. Contact your hosting provider for more information.”

The police website on the other hand, was also inaccessible for over 10 hours in the course of the day.

But according to Punch, police sources said about 8,000 candidates had been able to register as of 2pm.

“Candidates started registering online from 4am on Friday when the portals opened for registration; as of 2pm, over 8,000 candidates had registered online. The traffic was huge and this explains why many applicants could not access the websites because the servers were down,” a source explained.

The operator of Smart and Bright cafe, Kubwa, who gave his name as Kingsley, said he had to turn back many candidates because the recruitment portals were not accessible, adding that only few candidates were able to register.

Victor Igaman of Igaman Cafe, also stated that he turned back candidates on account of the jammed police servers. At Christ link cafe, about seven applicants had successfully applied while the eight person was observed filling in his bio-data.

A candidate, who gave her name as Margaret, said she was able to apply after spending 20 minutes, adding that the huge traffic on the websites was to blame for the hiccups experienced by candidates.

The Head of Press and Public Relations in PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, said the commission’s technical team was working on the servers to address the hitches.

“I have notified our technical team and they are working on the servers, all the hiccups would be addressed and candidates would find it easier to file their applications. I believe the issues we are experiencing were caused by the traffic from the huge number of applicants,” he explained.

The frustration of the applicants was vented on social media as some applicants berated poor infrastructural preparedness of authorities for the barrage of applications.

An applicant, Samogconsu, on an online forum, questioned the size of the bandwidth being used by the police for the application.

He said, “I just decided to visit the recruitment website this morning and discovered that the hosting company has suspended the website meant for the recruitment exercise.

“Could it be the police owed the hosting company or they have limited bandwidth that caused the shutdown? I think they need to give explanations to Nigerians. It is saying ‘This account has been suspended, contact your hosting provider for more information'.”

Another applicant, identified as Adet5 said, “Concerning the ongoing police recruitment exercise, I observed that the website is malfunctioning. It is submitting application automatically even without the completion of filling of the forms and all efforts to reach its help desk has been abortive. Please is there anything I can do?”

Appointment can't make me quit acting –Femi Adebayo

Femi Adebayo needs little or no introduction in the Nigerian movie scene. Asides from being the son of legendary actor, Adebayo Salami alias Oga Bello, the actor is sometimes referred to as a poster boy for Yoruba movies.

Recently, he got an appointment as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulFatah Ahmed, on tourism and culture. Even though the actor is ecstatic about his appointment, he believes  his new position is currently a huge distraction to his career.

He said that although the appointment has taken most of his time, he has no regrets.
He said, “I was called to serve and I would give it all I got. Serving as the special assistant to the governor of Kwara State is a huge distraction but I do not mind because the society has given me so much and it is time for me to give back. I cannot remember the last time I went to a movie location.”
In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actor shut down rumours that he was gradually quitting acting for politics, emphasising that his post is only an appointment and not an elective one.
“I am not a politician. It is an appointment and not an elective post. It is a call to serve and the governor believes that I am capable enough to handle the area of arts, culture and tourism of my state and that is why I was appointed, I am not a politician,” he said.
Known to be a ladies’ man, the actor modestly refused the title, claiming that he has mutual respect for all his fans both male and female. He also told Saturday Beats about his plans for marriage.
“I am not a ladies’ man. My female fans appreciate my work and I appreciate my fans as well.”
On whether he has any plans for marital life anytime soon, the actor simply said, “I am waiting for God’s time.”
The actor further told Saturday Beats that his plate is very full at the moment because apart from being a special adviser to the governor, he just bagged an endorsement deal with a real estate company, Kayode-Obembe &CO.
“I recently bagged an endorsement deal with Kayode-Obembe &CO and I am glad to be a part of the team. I had several offers but I decided to be a part of this because it is a very reputable company. Before I accepted the offer, I did my investigation and I was very convinced that this company is highly reputable and reliable and the CEO is a pastor. It means that I am on the right path,” he said.

Toke Makinwa finally reacts to her alleged child instagram drama

Popular OAP and Vlogger, Toke Makinwa, caused a little internet frenzy during the week when a commentator on her Instagram page accused her of not only having a child but also refusing to let the public know shortly after she posted a picture of herself on the social media platform (HERE).

While some urged her to show the world her ‘child’, others simply asked the commentator to mind her business but Makinwa simply just deleted the post from her account.
Some other people may take such a comment to heart and probably lash out at the commentator but it seems Makinwa is having a hearty laughter over the issue because when Saturday Beats reached out to her, she explained that it was laughable that anyone would take such a comment seriously.
“I have been in this industry for over six years. My radio career started in 2010 and I am working with one of the most popular radio stations in Nigeria, I was on television and I have a Vlog. If I have a child, everyone would know. It is laughable and there is no iota of truth in that post,” she said.

Jubilant residents of Mushin said Oloriesho had been enjoying protection from some influential politicians for a long time. Man batters tenant for not vacating father’s house

Dupe Balogun
A 22-year-old man, Tunde Sanusi, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly beating up his father’s tenant, a 37-year-old pregnant woman.

Sanusi was said to have pummelled the victim, Mrs. Dupe Balogun, and damaged one of her eyes for allegedly failing to vacate the house after she had been served a notice to quit.
The building is located on Andrew Street, Lagos Island, while the incident happened on Sunday, March 27.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the landlord had been hard on Balogun for refusing to comply with the notice, allegedly threatening to kill the woman and her son.
The trader said she was ill on that day and was about entering her room on her way back from a hospital around 4pm when an argument ensued between her and Sanusi.
Our correspondent was told that the suspect, together with his sister and the father, afterwards descended on Balogun and beat her up. She was said to have been given a fist blow in the eye by Sanusi during the scuffle.
The incident was reported at the Adeniji Adele Police Divison and Sanusi was arrested. Balogun, who is four months pregnant, told the police that the injury would have been much but for the intervention of the neighbours.
She said, “The landlord gave us a notice to quit and always came to our apartment to bang the door, threatening to kill my son and me. As I came back from the hospital around 4pm on Sunday and sat in front of my shop, Tunde (Sanusi), the landlord’s son, approached and challenged me, saying I refused to quit the house after receiving the notice. I told him to let my husband return.
“All of a sudden, he started abusing me. Before I knew what was happening, he gave me a fist blow in the eye. The landlord and another child of his joined Tunde to beat me up. It was my neigbours that rescued me.”
Sanusi, however, denied beating the tenant, saying the woman fell while she was struggling with him. He also refuted the claim that his father and sister joined him to assault the woman.
The suspect said he met Balogun on his way to the bathroom on that day and she started abusing him.
He said, “I also abused her. She attempted to hold my shirt and I pushed her. Maybe as a result of that she hit her eye on a grinding machine on the premises. I did not touch her; my daddy told me to leave her and he did not touch her either.
“I only told her that her rent was due and that she should pack out from our house. She replied that I should do it myself. She held me and I pushed her. My sister did not beat her.”
A police prosecutor, Inspector Philip Osijale, brought Sanusi before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on one count of assault occasioning harm.
The charge read, “That you, Tunde Sanusi, and one other at large, at Andrew by Rica Street, Lagos Island, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully assault one Dupe Balogun by giving her a blow in her left eye and gave her bodily harm, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”
The accused pleaded not guilty and elected summary trial.
He was granted bail by the presiding magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum, while the case was adjourned till May 11, 2016.

Governor Fayose lambasted over his comment on Chibok girls

Criticisms have trailed the outburst of Governor Ayodele Fayose on the abducted Chibok schoolgirls. He had said the abduction was not true, but a political instrument to vote out Goodluck Jonathan.

While the Boko Haram group showed video of the over 200 girls in captivity, a global outrage had trailed the abduction.

In a recent interview, a former British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, said US and UK intelligence surveillance located the missing girls at the Boko Haram Forest but could not do anything as Nigerian authorities did not ask for help.

But Fayose added a twist to the abduction saga when he claimed that the girls were not kidnapped.

Recalled that the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan had also lived in denial up till three weeks after the news of the abduction broke, saying no schoolgirl was kidnapped in Chibok.

The senator representing Osun-West senatorial district, Isiaka Adeleke, said Fayose should put himself in the shoes of the schoolgirls’ parents, adding that even former President Jonathan later admitted that the schoolgirls were kidnapped.

Adeleke said, “Fayose should not trivialise this touchy issue. The governor should use his time wisely and pray for the safe return of these girls.”

The senator representing the Osun-East senatorial district, Babajide Omoworare, called on the country’s security agencies to invite Fayose to tell Nigerians where the kidnapped schoolchildren are.

In a reaction on Thursday, Omoworare said his called for the interrogation of Fayose because the governor appeared to have classified information on the whereabouts of the girls.

He said, “Security agents must invite Fayose for us to know where the schoolgirls are. He is probably having classified information. However, if he is playing politics as usual, it is cruel to mock the girls’ parents and Nigerians who are daily in agony and hoping that someday, the girls would come back alive.

“Buhari administration will do all it can to bring the girls and end the mockery from people like Fayose.”

Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Bamidele Faparusi, described Fayose’s claim as a threat to national security.

Faparusi maintained that Fayose by the statement had insulted the sensibilities of the families of the girls.

A former Executive Secretary, Ayedire Council of Osun State, Gbenga Ogunkanmi, said Nigerians should not accord Fayose attention.

In a statement by his media aide, Ismail Usman, on Thursday, Ogunkanmi said Fayose had lost the sense of dignity and integrity.

He said, “It is shocking that a person occupying the exalted position of governor could open his mouth and gush out these insensible utterances. It shows how debased our political system is. It shows that something is wrong with how our political leaders emerge.”

Nigeria Records First Baby Conceived From Frozen Egg

Nigeria has recorded the first successful birth of a baby conceived from frozen egg of a 44-year-old woman, who had suffered infertility for eight years, making it the first in the country and West Africa.

The birth and conception of the baby, named Tiwatope, which is the 5001st in the world, was carried out by Nigerian fertility specialists at The Bridge Clinic, a Lagos-based fertility treatment centre, where the mother  had her eggs frozen using the vitrification (flash-freezing) process.

Announcing the medical milestone,  a fertility physician at the Bridge Clinic, Lagos, Dr Emmanuel Owie, said the birth of the baby on February 16, 2016,  effectively puts Nigeria on the global map as regards the practice of oocyte (egg) freezing or cryopreservation, a new offering in the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) space.

He said prior to the birth of Tiwatope, the new practice seemed to be an exclusive preserve of the developed world of Europe and North America.
He said: “Tiwatope’s mother had her eggs frozen for two months, using the vitrification, also known as flash-freezing, process. This is the cutting edge technology in cryobiology, where the eggs or oocytes of a woman is dehydrated and the water content is replaced with ‘anti-freeze’ solution (cryoprotectants) before freezing. This will prevent the formation of ice crystals which could destroy the cell.”

On her readiness for pregnancy, Owie noted: “We fertilized the eggs using a standard technique known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to overcome the egg shell which normally gets hardened with freezing.
“The fertilized egg was subsequently transferred into her womb, resulting in the pregnancy with Tiwa. She had her antenatal care in her family hospital and delivered the baby boy through Caesarian Section.

“At The Bridge Clinic, we celebrate Tiwa’s birth as it is a further demonstration of our coming of age in the practice of assisted reproductive technology. It is a show of the sum of our strengths — our people, our process and our infrastructure. It demonstrates our commitment to global best practices which ensures that our offerings are in tandem with what is obtainable in the developed world, both in variety and in quality.”

NOTE

Noting that the baby and his mother are in good health, Owie said egg freezing was particularly recommended for women diagnosed with cancer, who may lose their fertility during chemotherapy; women with a family history of early menopause; women with objections to storing frozen embryos for religious and/or moral reasons; and women who want to delay child-bearing in order to pursue some personal goals.
