Enyioma Okwudiri, a 30 year old banker at Okigwe town in Imo State was reportedly shot dead last Saturday at his home town, Umuka - Okigwe, while he was on the way to drop another lady, Nanman Lamak  who was also killed in his Honda Civic car.

According to Chidiebube Okeoma who shared the story, the Police on Tuesday claimed that they had shot dead the suspected killer, simply identified as Amobi, and popularly known as Toosolo Sharpiro. He was said to have been arrested in Aba, Abia state, but shot dead when he attempted to escape while he was being brought back to Okigwe Local Government Area.

A 14-year-old girl, Victoria Emmanuel is battling for her life after being bathed with acid by a friend on her birthday.

The incident occurred on March 29, around the night market in Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos Mainland, where she was celebrating her birthday.While her peers were pouring water on her body, a 13-year-old boy, Moshood Yusuf, allegedly entered a shop, picked up a bottle and emptied its content on Victoria.

Witnesses said Yusuf thought he was pouring a disinfectant known as Izal on the girl.


When The Nation visited the victim’s 1, Babaelegbe Street, Mafoluku home yesterday, Yusuf’s parents were there begging her family.

Victoria said she told Yusuf not to pour the content of the bottle on her since they did not know what was inside.

She said: “It was my birthday. I had told my friends the previous Monday that Wednesday March 29 was my birthday. So, when I went to fetch water at the night market that night, those who came to my house to rejoice with me followed me.
“I was carrying a big bucket on my head but on the road, they put it down and started pouring the water on me to celebrate my birthday. Some were pouring dirty water on me and others sand. That was how Moshood ran into a shop and brought out a container. There was something inside and I told him not to pour it on me because we don’t know what was in it. He opened it, smelled it and said it smelt like chemical. We told him again that he shouldn’t pour that on me but he didn’t listen. As I walked past him, he poured the content on my body from behind. I screamed and ran towards the tap but he got there before me and opened it so that water would pour on my body.

“While I was under the tap, the woman who owns the place chased us away that I was wasting her water, though she owed me N70. That was the last thing I remembered. I was later told that I fainted and was rushed to Edmark Hospital. I was discharged in the evening of the following day because my daddy insisted he wanted to take me to General Hospital. So, I was moved to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where they have been giving me treatment.
“Moshood was arrested by policemen from Makinde but he was later released. He has not come to see me since then but his parents have been coming. We didn’t fight. We have never quarrelled. He’s my friend. I don’t know what happened. Although, one Ganiyu claimed that he told him he was going to hurt me, I don’t know if that’s true.
“They said they have asked him where he got acid from but he insisted he thought it was Izal that was inside. He said he was looking for a container to enable him carry more water and pour on me. But the shop owner has denied keeping any acid in her shop. The woman was crying and swearing that she didn’t keep anything like that since she has little children, who could have easily gotten to it.”

Victoria’s mother, Mrs. Chidinma Emmanuel lamented the hardship the incident has caused her family, saying that she has not been able to concentrate on her petty trade.



She noted the expenses they have incurred since the mishap, wondering if her daughter’s skin would ever heal.

Mrs. Emmanuel said her family was not interested in a case, explaining that they would appreciate if the hospital bill was refunded.

She said:

“His parents have been coming. They have extended solidarity but I think it shouldn’t just be by words of mouth. You can see that we are a struggling family.  This unfortunate incident has cost us so much. There’s a drug we have been buying N1,200 per sachet to apply on her body.
“I expect that Moshood’s family would support us financially or pick the bills, since all the children there said he was told to not pour the content on my daughter but he went ahead to do it. So far, we haven’t heard anything from them. Yes, they paid the N16,000 we were charged at Edmark the night the incident happened. After that, they haven’t done anything again. If they are coming for settlement, the only settlement is for them to pay all expenses incurred.”

Moshood’s mother, Mrs. Ganiyat Yusuf described the incident as a mistake, saying her family was awaiting the final outcome from LASUTH, to know what to do next.

She said: “It was just a mistake. In fact, Moshood also got burnt by the acid on his chest and leg. He didn’t know the content of the bottle and since they were jubilating, he poured it on her without knowing. It’s a regrettable mistake. But what we want is for peace to reign. We don’t want a situation where both families would start fighting over it or the two children becoming enemies.”

EFCC arrest 5 notorious fraudsters in Kaduna, recovers fake $570,000 (Photos)

EFCC have arrested five notorious fraudsters made up of four Nigerians and one Nigerien who are specialized in duping innocent persons of their hard earned monies. The suspects, Salisu Rabiu, Ibrahim Idris, Haruna Abdullahi, Abubakar Umar and Magaji Musa (Nigerien) were arrested in a bush along Sabon Gari, Kurmin Kogi, Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna state.


According to the commission, the five-man gang met their waterloo when they conspired among themselves to lure an unsuspecting victim into believing that some unclaimed boxes containing huge amount of USD were kept with some herdsmen believed to be accomplices by an unidentified politician.

The would-be victim who sensed that he was being put in line to be duped contacted the Commission, who then went into action to arrest the gang members During the operation, the commission discovered a sum of five hundred and seventy thousand ($570,000) fake US dollars and some charms.

The suspects are currently being investigated.

I Warned Her; Friend Of UNILAG Girl Who Died After Night Out With Man

A friend of the late 100-Level Chemistry Education student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Temitope Aminat Omolara, who died in mysterious circumstances, has spoken of how she warned the deceased to stop going to clubs.

The late Omolara died last week, days after she allegedly followed a man to a club. She vomited blood before she died, it was said.

The deceased’s friend, who simply gave her name as Olanike, said she had warned her several times, but said her advice fell on deaf ears.


Olanike attended Gbaja Senior Girls Secondary School in Surulere with the late Omolara.

She said the deceased was brilliant while in secondary school, noting that her character changed after they were both admitted into university.

She said: “I called her when she started going out at nights, but she would say she needed to socialise.”

Some students in her department believed the late Temitope may have died of what they called spiritual attack, while other said the death may be as a result of food poison.

A member of Moremi Hall Executive, who preferred not to be named, said the late Temitope started vomiting blood several hours after she returned from club.

She said: “There was nothing we can link her death to, because she did not show any sign of illness prior to the incident. We are suspecting she may have been poisoned from wherever she went to. She was taken to the medical centre immediately she started vomiting blood. But, she asked to be taken to another hospital.

“A guy, who seems to be her friend or brother, came to pick her up from the hostel and from there, we don’t know what actually transpired along the line.”

*CBN’s stress test shows gives negative signal

The Capital Adequacy Ratios (CARs) of three big banks have fallen below regulatory capital requirement, the result of stress test conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the status of the banking system has shown.

Overall, the result of the solvency stress test indicated the potential for high contagion   risk   through   unsecured   interbank   exposure   as   three banks including two Systemically Important Banks failed CAR after a 100 per cent default shock.

The test, contained in the Financial Stability Report, released yesterday by the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, classified lenders into three groups: large banks, those with assets greater than or equal to N1 trillion; medium banks with assets greater than or equal to N500 billion but less than N1 trillion and small banks with assets of less than N500 billion.

The CAR is a ratio of bank’s assets to its risks and is 10 per cent for national banks and 15 per cent for banks with international subsidiaries and 16 per cent for Systematically Important Banks (SIBs). It said the baseline CAR for the banking industry, large, medium, and small banks stood at 14.78, 15.47, 12.75 and 3.14 per cent, respectively.

The  banking  industry stress  test was  carried  out  at  end-December  last year, covering  23 commercial  and merchant  banks, and   evaluated  the  resilience  of  the  banks  to credit,  liquidity, interest  rate and  contagion  risks.

The tests, which measured the lenders’ positions as at December last year, were conducted using the  Implied  Cash  Flow  Analysis  (ICFA)  and Maturity  Mismatch/Rollover  Risk methods, to  assess  the  resilience  of  individual  banks  and the banking industry to both liquidity and funding shocks.

It revealed that after a one-day run, the liquidity ratio for the industry would decline to 30.2 per cent from the 44.4 per cent pre -shock position and, to 9.73 per cent and 6.76 per cent after  a five-day  and cumulative  30-day  run,  respectively.

Similarly,  a five-day  and  cumulative 30-day  run  on  the  banking  industry  would  result  in  liquidity  shortfalls of N2.1 trillion  and N2.3 trillion, respectively.

The test showed that commercial banks experienced deterioration in assets quality  at end-December 2016. The ratio of non-performing loans (NPLs) to gross loans deteriorated by 2.3 and 8.7 percentage points to 14 per cent   compared with the levels at end-June 2016 and end-December 2015, respectively.

The deterioration in asset quality, the report said, was largely attributed to the rising inflationary trend, negative Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, and the depreciation of the naira.

The CBN said economic crisis adversely impacted borrowers, resulting  in rising NPLs which  required  additional provisioning by  banks, thereby reducing the banks’ CAR.

Angry Nigerians Attack Police Station Over Killing Of Woman In Lagos

About three people sustained gunshot injuries and scores were injured during a protest in Mushin, Lagos State, over the killing of a 52-year-old trader, Mrs. Kudirat Adebayo.

The protesters had dumped the corpse of the deceased at the Olosan Police Station on Tuesday when the policemen allegedly shot and fired tear gas at the crowd.



It was learnt that in the melee, many residents were injured, while three people sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to different hospitals for treatment.

Sources say three policemen alleged to have been involved in the killing of Adebayo had been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

It was gathered that some policemen attached to the Olosan division had on Tuesday trailed a suspected fraudster to the Tollgate area of Mushin.

The suspect was said to have resisted arrest and mobilised his friends, who attacked the cops. The policemen reportedly called for reinforcement from the division.

The new police team deployed in the scene was said to have opened fire to disperse the attackers.

However, a stray bullet allegedly hit the victim in the head while she prepared to fry yam cake (ojojo) for her customers around 6pm.

The mother of two was said to have slumped and died.

When Punch visited the scene on Wednesday, thick bloodstains were observed where Adebayo breathed her last.

Grated yam flour, groundnut oil, and other items of her trade, were still in the place she left them, as a crowd of sympathisers called for justice.

It was learnt that the corpse had been deposited in the Mainland Mortuary, Yaba.

Her sister, Adenike Fatai, identified the policemen involved in the killing as Charles and Prince.

She said, “Some policemen on motorcycles trailed a man to Tollgate. They accused him of being a yahoo boy. They wanted to arrest him, but the man put up a fight against them.

“They called for reinforcement and that was how their colleagues came in a patrol van and started shooting indiscriminately. They fired more than 20 bullets. My sister, who was about to fry ojojo, was hit by a bullet. She fell and died.

“A motorcycle rider went to challenge Prince, telling him a woman had been hit by their bullet. Prince shot him as well in the leg. The policemen were six in number.”

The senior officer allegedly shot himself dead in his residence in Apapa area of Lagos due to what a source described as depression and health challenge.

It was learnt that a service pistol, expended and live ammunition, were recovered at the scene by police detectives at the residence. 

The deceased was said to have been depressed for a while over his inability to pay the school fees of his children due to scarcity of foreign exchange. 

His remains have been deposited at a mortuary. He is survived by his wife who is said to be residing in Abuja and two children school abroad.

Court Unfreezes Patience Jonathan's $5.9m Account

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to unfreeze the account of the wife of former President, Patience Jonathan.

One of the accounts which contained $5.9m was frozen when the court presided over by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun in December 2016, had made the freezing order following an application for an interim injunction by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that the accounts be frozen.

The EFCC had in an affidavit deposed to by one of its operatives, Mr. Abdulahi Tukur, told the judge that suspected proceeds of crime were retained in the accounts and urged the judge to urgently freeze the accounts pending the conclusion of its investigations.

Zamfara State Governor, Dr. Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, yesterday, denied attributing the outbreak of the deadly Cerebral Spinal Meningitis, CSM, to God’s punishment arising from fornication and other forms of disobedience to God.


 Rather, the governor said he actually lamented the paucity of appropriate vaccines to confront the outbreak of the fatal disease in his state and called for urgent assistance from relevant government agencies to contain the ailment. 
According to Vanguard, the governor, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Enlightenment, Mr. Ibrahim Magaji Dosara, pointed out that he merely asked Nigerians to move closer to God and plead for his mercy to avert further infectious diseases and other health crises in the state and Nigeria since God has answers to all challenges.

 The statement said:

 “The governor noted that the situation was unfortunate because the state does not have enough vaccines yet for the Type C Meningitis. “The governor, thereafter, enjoined all Nigerians to embrace prayers, as God who is aware of the outbreak of the ailment surely has antidote for it. “The governor specially appealed to Nigerians to make deliberate effort to be closer to God by shunning sins of fornication and other forms of disobedience so as to receive his divine health and other blessings, as he is closer to those who obey him and distant themselves from sins.”
