Atiku Asks FG To Arrest Those Behind Anti-Igbo Song

A former Vice-President and Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress,  Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has urged the Federal Government to fish out those behind a song disparaging people of Igbo extraction and ensure they are punished.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday, Atiku recalled that the Rwandan genocide was ignited by a song, titled ‘I hate Hutus’, sung by a popular musician, Simon Bikindi.

The former Vice-President called on men and women of goodwill to rise up against what he described as evil.

He said those who thought they could treat their fellow citizens unjustly, through a song, should also know that there were mechanisms within and outside Nigeria to ensure that they answer for their crimes.

The statement read in part, “It has come to my attention that a song disparaging people of Igbo origin, and which wishes them dead, is circulating in some parts of the nation.

“I totally and unequivocally condemn this development, and I call on all men of goodwill to rise up against this evil.

“This song is reminiscent of the beginnings of the Rwanda genocide. Nigerians need to be aware that the Rwandan genocide was believed to have been ignited by a song titled Nanga Abahutu (I hate Hutus), sung by Rwanda’s then most popular musician, Simon Bikindi.”

A 78 year-old man, Alhaji Isa Musa, has blamed hunger and poverty for his decision to engage in buying and selling stolen motorcycles.

Speaking to Northern City News while being paraded before newsmen at the Police headquarters in Bauchi on Friday, Musa said he started the illegal business in 2011.

The resident of Bakin Kura of Bauchi metropolis said he had operated a provision store at the Muda Laval market but the business became distressed and he could no longer feed his large family of three wives, 35 children and 18 grandchildren.
“I had a provision shop in Mud Laval market but all the goods got finished because I used the proceeds to feed my family.
“I started buying and selling stolen motorcycles because of hunger and poverty,” he said.
Asked if he had no mature offspring to support him, he said none of his children could support him because they were not buoyant.

The suspect said he gave a motorcycle to one of his children to transport himself to school.

The Septuagenarian expressed regrets over his action and pleaded with the authorities to pardon him, saying he was diabetic.

He said, “I am suffering from diabetes and I need to treat myself, I beg the police authorities to pardon me.
“Although, I’ve been doing this illegal business for six years now, if they pardon me, I promise and assure them that this will be my last.”

Musa also confessed to have sold Indian hemp in the past six years “but I stopped dealing in drugs about four years ago.”

My father never assisted me-Says 24-year old bag snatcher caught in Lagos(Photos)

The operatives of Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command yesterday recovered an AK-47 assault rifle from three young men in Apapa Area of Lagos State just as it arrested a 23-year old bag snatcher on Friday in Alagbado during a botch operation.

The operatives, who were on routine patrol of Apapa sighted three young men carrying a bag at around 11:00 p.m on Friday.
The officers accosted the men but the suspects on sighting officers dropped the bag and fled the scene. A check on the content of the bag revealed an AK-47. No ammunition was found in the bag.

Meanwhile, the suspected okada robber, Ayobami Adedeji, was chased by the operatives on routine patrol of Kola Bus Stop, in Alagbado Area of Lagos, after snatching a hand bag around 10:00 p.m.
Adedeji, in company of an accomplice, who he referred to as Aboki, had on Monday night, operating with a motorcycle, snatched the hand bag of one Kudirat Oyebade at Kola Bus Stop.

The operatives who were close to the scene of the incident chased the motorcycle into the inner streets. One of the suspects was however arrested while the rider escaped abandoning his motor cycle.
Adedeji, who snatched the bag stated
“I was a bus conductor. I went to Kotangoa market on Monday to meet Aboki about how to raise money for ourselves…. We have been together for a long time. At around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, we perfected the plan to operate together on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, but our focus were Adura and Council bus stops around Agbado areas of Lagos State. Our priorities were handbags and purses.”
“We had snatched two bags and my colleague was keeping the money before our last botched operation. This was our first time…. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t know RRS operatives were monitoring us. I snatched the bag and they chased us into the streets. My colleague escaped after abandoning his okada and I was arrested,” he continued.
He added,
“I dropped out in SS1 after losing my mother. My father was just a ceremonial father. He never cared about me since the death of my mother. He never assisted me but I had to fend for myself after the death of my mother.”
The rifle has been deposited at the RRS Headquarters for further investigation while Adedeji has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti for further investigations.

President Buhari condems Anambra church killings

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attack on Ozubulu church in Anambra State by a yet to be identified gang describing the incident as “an appalling crime against humanity and unspeakable sacrilege.”

Expressing his grief in  a strongly worded statement issued by Garba Shehu the the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, President Buhari said that “there was no justification whatsoever to target Church worshippers and kill them in cold blood.”

He said this kind of atrocity “plumbs the depth of depravity and extreme cruelty of the kind that words cannot adequately express.”

According to the President, there is no religion that does not lay constant emphasis on the sanctity of life, and that “all Nigerians must rise up and speak with one voice against these remorseless evil men.”  While expressing his deep felt sympathy with the families of the victims, the Church leadership and the government of Anambra State, he reassured all Nigerians of his administration’s firm and uncompromising commitment to protect their lives and property at all times.

I’m Not Under Probe, I Transformed Nigeria’s Aviation Sector, Stella Oduah Hits Back

A former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, says she is unaware of any probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on any matter allegedly concerning her.

She was reacting to media report that she had been invited by the anti-graft agency for questioning over a N225 million bullet-proof BMW allegedly purchased her when she was a minister.

The car was said to have been bought by one of the agencies under the aviation ministry.

But Ms. Oduah told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday that there was no basis upon which she could be probed, saying that the vehicle did not belong to her.

“To start with, I do not know where any letter on the probe is because nobody has invited me, and as far as I know, there is nothing and there cannot be anything on invitation for purchase of a BMW.

“I did not buy a BMW; I have never bought a BMW. The BMW is a property of the government, and it is still in government care.

“The car is with the agency that bought it.

“The agency is still using it, and so, why will the car which belongs to government and in the care of government and being used by government, be an issue for me?

“I have since left the ministry,” she said.

She said that the reports were the handiworks of persons, who were not comfortable with the tremendous achievements she made in the aviation sector and wanted to tarnish her image.

The former minister said that when she was appointed, Nigerian airports were in poor states and could be compared to motor parks.

She said that no effort by anyone, including her predecessors in the ministry, could be compared with she did to reposition the aviation industry for the period she was the minister.

Oduah, now a lawmaker, challenged anyone to do a comparative analysis of the sector before she became minister, while she was minister and after she left as minister.

“I think some people are not just comfortable that what we did in aviation is unimaginable.

“What we did in aviation was so far-reaching that it had never been done before; it was unprecedented.

“To get into the lounge where people sit was impossible; most motor parks were better than what we had at the airport, whether in Lagos, Abuja or Sokoto.

“We took them on and efficiently, and in a very timely manner, changed every one of them and made Nigeria airspace safe,’’ she said.

She said safety of Nigerian passengers was made a priority while she held sway, adding that landing gears, flight gadgets, and every single thing was functioning to make Nigeria’s airspace recognised by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

“I challenge anybody to just do a spreadsheet; how aviation was before, how I made aviation and how aviation is today.”

Daniel stated this while featuring as a guest of Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria, FIBAN, at an interactive session held in Abeokuta.

“It is good to have opposition for good democracy to thrive,” Democracy without a viable opposition is dictatorship. It will checkmate excesses of government in power, which Fayose is doing; but it is not good playing politics ‎with president’s health.”

“He is our president, and I am one of those who want him to recover with good health, and there is no reason why we should toy with his health. I want his recovery and that is my prayers,” Mr. Daniel said.
