Pastor admits defrauding Atiku of N918m
Mr Dickson Graymond, a retired detective with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC ) insisted on the voluntariness of Akpan-Jacob’s alleged confessional statement while giving evidence during a trial.
While being led in evidence by Mr Babatunde Sonoiki, the EFCC prosecuting counsel, Graymond said: “There are so many things that he confided in me that he refused to put into writing.
“He admitted to me that Florence Doregos was Titi Atiku but he refused to put that into writing.
“He confided in me that he wanted to contest in the Akwa-Ibom elections and that as soon as he begs Her Excellency, the matter will be over.
“All what he told me were not forced, I did not even force him to write all what he confided in me in his confessional statement.
“All what he said in his statement was of his own free will.”
During his cross-examination by Mr Amos Ibe, Akpan-Jacob’s defence counsel, the retired detective denied illegally detaining the pastor in EFCC’s custody for three weeks and denying him access to legal representation.
“The first defendant (Akpan-Jacobs) was served with bail conditions by the EFCC but he could not provide sureties and we could not grant him bail on self-recognisance because of the gravity of the case against him.
“He did not spend three weeks with us but six days and he was given the opportunity to produce a lawyer but he refused, saying he will write his statement on his own.
“Dapo and Chima (EFCC operatives) did not force him to write any undertaking,” he told the court.
Graymond also denied bringing Akpan-Jacobs to the Abuja office of the EFCC on the influence of Titi Atiku.

Eskkimuthu had gone to the district collector’s office for a public grievance day meeting on Monday, according to a report by the Deccan Chronicle. However, they were made to wait for a long time, following which Esakkimuthu lost his patience and set himself and his family members on fire using kerosene after a tight hug.
By the time the locals and police managed to put out the fire, all four of them were left severely burnt. They were then rushed to Tirunelveli hospital, where three of them succumbed to the burns. Esakkimuthu’s condition is said to be critical and is being treated for third-degree burns.
Esakkimuthu had taken a loan of Rs 1.45 lakh from his distant relative Muthulakshmi, who works as a usurer. She had been torturing Esakkimuthu by demanding double the amount she had lent. Muthulakshmi is said to have contacts in the police department and is reportedly close to a retired sub-inspector, who is believed to have influenced the police not to act against her.
Following the drastic step by Esakkimuthu, Achanputhur police and the district administration arrested Muthulakshmi on Tuesday and registered a case against her. The district collector has ordered an enquiry into the matter. Esakkimuthu had submitted a petition to the district collector on the issue six times, but no action was taken.
The case has raised questions about the lethargic attitude of the police and administration in Tirunelveli district and has also exposed the menace of corrupt moneylenders who never miss a chance to exploit the poor and innocent daily wagers.

Man Rapes, Kills Catholic Sister,Dumps Her Dead Body In Dam
Sister Plaxedes Kamundiya, who was an official at St Georges High School was found ,floating in a dam after days of searching for her.
According to sources, the now deceased visited the Mtoko Mother of Peace Community in an assessment tour in connection with a visit by mass server students from St Georges High School in Harare.
After interacting with the orphans and concluding her business for the day the now deceased decided to take a brief pilgrimage to the Glorious Cross of life which is a prayer shrine. She was escorted by a female community member to the area whom she told she needed brief time to say her prayers in solitude.
The informant took a siesta and then woke up later only to realize Sister Plaxedes’ car was still parked at the same spot where she had left her. This raised her alarm bells as the deceased had told her that she was going to pray for a brief while only.
After asking several people if they had seen Sister Plaxedes the now panicked woman decided to send a search party after her at the blue cross shrine. The search proved effortless, with the now accused having met with the group and made claims that the deceased had gone to Mushimbo after they had asked him her whereabouts.
The accused also made several claims, among them that Sister Plaxedes appeared not to be of a sound mind when he ‘bumped’ into her and she had gone on a sudden sojourn to Mushimbo.
It was during the second ordeal when they approached the accused who kept sticking to his statement from the previous day, they decided to search his belongings and found groceries which he claimed came from his sister in Murehwa. These groceries were the first link to Sister Plaxedes’s disappearance.
The search party then proceeded to Mutemwa dam where they were greeted by a ghastly sight of the deceased’s body floating on top of the water.
Her body showed signs of struggle including bruises and blisters and she was still bleeding from the nose.
The accused confessed to having killed Sister Plaxedes and hid her bloody clothes in a sack hidden at Chido Mudzinyama Farm.
He also confessed to dragging her body and tossing it in the dam in a bit to conceal the evidence. In true serial killer fashion, the accused retained the nun’s under garments in his suitcase back at home.
The accused confessed that he had used a heavy stone to hit the deceased who he appeared to have engaged in fierce struggle with, judging from the bruises all over her body.
The struggle is thought to have happened when he raped her before knocking her out. In a coldly calculated move, he hid her body under tree branches while he tried to get rid of the evidence shortly before dumping her body in the dam.

New Aare Onakakanfo Visits Ooni Of Ife [Photo]
Ooni of Ife made the submission during a historic visit by the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo to him at his Ile Oodua palace in Ile Ife.
Congratulating the Aare designate, Ooni Ogunwusi applauded his choice and prayed that God empower him to carry out the work assigned to him for the Yoruba race stressing that there is no doubt his choice is as a result of his antecedent as a fearless fighter for the emancipation of Yoruba interests by peaceful means.
The African foremost monarch added that partisan politics has destroyed so many things, saying Aare Ona Kakanfo is a warrior who has a big role to play in the emancipation and unity of his people, hence the importance attached to the title .
According to the Arole Oduduwa, the title is not a social chieftaincy title, but one with robust traditional background and expectations.

Ewedu Soup Wipes Out Entire Police Officer’s Family In Kaduna [Photos]
The family five, including an unborn baby, as well as two domestic dogs, perished the next day after consuming a meal made with the vegetable. The dead were identified as ex-police inspector, Peter Dauda, 43, his expectant 35-year-old wife, Dorothy, nine-year-old son, Godwin and six-year-old daughter, Patience.
Sunday Sun learnt from a member of the community that the family had enjoyed their meal prepared with jute one night and went to bed. They woke up hale and hearty. Meanwhile before turning in that night, the used portion of the jute was spread on a container overnight. In the evening of that day, it was used to make a fresh pot of soup.
With no premonition, the family ate the soup went to bed, but never woke up again. The sumptuous vegetable soup allegedly killed them.
Narrating the sad incident, President of Dushai Community Development Association, Mr. Daniel Duniya Bosan said,
“The family had prepared and eaten the jute leaves in the evening of Wednesday, September 6, 2017 and went to bed without any problem. But the remaining leaves were spread on a container and preserved for consumption the following day.
“Trouble started on Thursday, September 7, shortly after they had eaten the vegetable soup. All the family members started complaining of stomach aches the following day, which was Friday, and neighbours rushed them to nearby hospital.
“The jute leaves was suspected to have been laced with a poisonous substance by unknown persons. The first family member to die was their six-year-old daughter, Patience, who gave up the same Friday, while Dorothy, Godwin and their father, Inspector Dauda, died on Saturday, September 9.”
The community leader said the whole village was thrown into mourning when news of the death of the family in suspicious circumstances was broken to them.
He described late Inspector Dauda as a hardworking and peace loving man who contributed in no small way to the development of Dushai community by preaching unity and love among the people.
Saddened by the news of the family’s death, Kaduna State Deputy Governor Barnabas Bantex paid a condolence visit to the community.
While in the community, Bantex appealed for calm, particularly from the youths and urged them shun any rumour relating to the death of members of the family.
“I am appealing to you to shun any rumour relating to the death of this family members because such rumour is capable of escalating the already charged atmosphere in your community,” Bantex said. Bantex who hails from Kaura Council Area was accompanied on the condolence visit by top government functionaries as well as the sole administrators of Zango and Kaura councils.
The Deputy Governor used the opportunity to call on all communities in Southern Kaduna to assist government in sustaining the relative peace being enjoyed in the area.
In his reaction to the death of the family of five, Anglican Bishop of Kafanchan Diocese, Reverend Markus Dogo condoled the community and appealed to the people, “to commit everything to God and continue in fervent prayers for God to avert such incident future.”
Ewedu, also known as Jute leaf, is one of the most popular vegetables among the Yoruba people of the Southwestern part of Nigeria. However, it is also eaten among other tribes of the country. It is usually eaten with starchy foods like amala, eba, pounded yam and semovita.
