Aged parents of elected and appointed government officials have become targets of kidnappers in Bayelsa State. Unidentified gunmen have abducted 78-year-old Patimi Akene, the mother of the state Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr. Furoebi Akene.
Curiously, the kidnappers were said to have asked the commissioner to resign from the cabinet of Governor Seriake Dickson as a ransom to free his mother.
The latest incident came 18 days after the 90-year-old mother-in-law of the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Kombowei Benson, was kidnapped by gunmen at Korokorosei community, Southern Ijaw.
While the security agencies were still searching for the speaker’s mother-in-law identified as Ogboro Orumo, gunmen struck at Ofoinbiri, in the same local government area and whisked away Akene’s mother.
The Nation gathered that Patimi was abducted over the weekend from her community described by security operatives as “very remote.”

The commissioner’s mother and one of her granddaughters were returning home from a church vigil at about 1am on Saturday when the gunmen seized her.
They were said to have immediately ferried the victim to the creeks sing their speedboat.
Akene, who confirmed his mother’s abduction, said the gunmen abducted her without firing a bullet.
He further confirmed that the septuagenarian was in the company of her granddaughter when the assailants struck.
He said the hoodlums covered their victim’s mouth with a handkerchief when she screamed for help and threatened to kill her and her granddaughter.
