The All Progressives Congress, APC, South East chapter, has called on Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha to rescind what it called the “unconstitutional and undemocratic” plan to issue identity cards to Northerners living and doing business in the state.
In a statement by Osita Okechukwu, spokesman for South East APC, it said while it condemned the devilish and heinous atrocities of the Boko Haram elements, it believed that they are not executing a Northern script and also described their agenda as opaque and futile.
“We cannot easily forget that Boko Haram killed General Mohammed Shuwa, uncountable Northerners and nearly assassinated the Shehu of Borno,” the statement said, noting that the Emir of Kano was reported not to have fully recovered from the trauma he suffered in their hands before his death.
“Any attempt to segregate Nigerians like in Nazi Germany will be the greatest disservice to our dear country and to do so will either by omission or commission be playing into the hands of Boko Haram insurgents.”
APC stressed that the unity, stability and harmonious relationship of Nigerian citizens is paramount and fundamental, noting that it similarly does not to the day Ndigbo residing in other parts of the country will be subjected to screening and carrying identity cards.
“APC South East maintains that the only way to crush Boko Haram insurgents is a well equipped Army, security agencies, vigilantes and improved welfare of the citizenry that engender hope, trust and confidence,” the statement continued, urging those agencies to expedite action on the screening of those Nigerians arrested in Abia State “so as to separate the wheat from the chaff.”
