A former military governor of defunct North western state, CP Usman Faruk (rtd), has urged the federal government to pay Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and other northern states the sum of N3 trillion that they had spent since 2009 on containing insurgency and maintaining security in the states “because security is the sole responsibility of the federal government.”
Usman, the Jarman Gombe, urged the federal government to stop the reported harassment and forceful registering of northerners in the South-east, saying that “such move portends danger for the country as it could lead to reprisal from northern states that could push the country down the cliff again.”
He said defunct North-west state comprising now Sokoto, Niger, Kebbi and Zamfara states, “the whole 19 northern states apart from maybe Kwara state have incurred lots of expenditure buying armoured vehicles, buying security equipment, paying for accommodation of security agents and their allowances which came to the tune of N3 trillion from my estimation between 2009 and now.”
He said: “From our constitution, security is the sole responsibility of the federal government which means whatever is incurred should be refunded fully by the federal government once the insecurity has abated. Theses 18 states apart from damages and loss of lives have spent N3 trillion to subdue the insurgency and this money should be refunded back to them.”
