Presidency declares security siege on Osun State ahead of Governorship Election. Troops have put the State of Osun in a lockdown, hours before a keenly watched governorship election is scheduled to take place.
NLC President Condemns The Militarisation of Osun State Ahead Of Election:
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, has warned against the militarisation of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State. Omar said the NLC is worried over huge deployment of security personnel just for the purpose of election in one state.
The labour leader said the heavy deployment of security personnel was anti-democratic as it could scare some of the voters from coming out to vote.
Omar said it was even more disturbing that operatives of the SSS who were deployed in Osun were shooting sporadically into air to scare people who had not been found to be involved in any form of violence.
He said, “We believe this cannot be helpful to the growth of any democratic culture as it portends an infringement on the rights of the electorate who may refuse to participate in the election as a result of the intimidating presence of armed security agents.
“More worrisome is the reported shootings across the state capital by officers of the State Security Services shortly after arriving the state for election-related duties.
“We wonder why the SSS had to waste bullets shooting sporadically to scare residents who were not engaged in any form of violence at the time of the shootings.”
