On June 30, 2017, a 22-year-old commercial sex worker, Blessing Udoh, allegedly handed over her three-month-old baby to a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Philip James, at Oko Oba, Abule-Egba, Lagos. In return, she collected N50,000.

Soon after the transaction, Saturday Punch learnt that the police were alerted that she might have sold her baby, Destiny, when her neighbours no longer saw the child.

She was subsequently arrested and on Friday charged with engaging in prostitution and selling her child before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecutor, Kehinde Omisakin, said the accused sold her baby on June 30 at about 6pm in abattoir area of Oko-Oba to Mr. and Mrs. Philip James who are both residents of Oron, Akwa Ibom.

The offences contravened Sections 142 and 276 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias, ordered that the accused should be remanded in police custody pending her bail application.

The case has been adjourned till August 23 for hearing on the bail application.
