Governors elected on the platform of Nigeria’s two major parties, APC and PDP are presently holding some crucial meetings ahead of a slated meeting of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, in Abuja.
The APC governors are meeting at the Imo state governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, while PDP governors are meeting in Maitama District.
A notice of the meeting of the PDP governors made available to the media on Monday had stated that the governors would elect a new chairman of the forum.
The notice signed by the coordinator of the forum, Onaiwu Osaro, had also said the governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko, who was the deputy to the former chairman, Godswill Akpabio would be elected to lead the forum by his colleagues.
For the APC, no formal statement was issued for Tuesday’s meeting, but sources said the governors were discussing the current financial situation of many states, who are finding it hard to pay workers’ salaries.
The governors had last month met with President Muhammadu Buhari before he was sworn in and the chairman of the APC governors’ forum, Rochas Okorocha, had informed journalists that they discussed the financial mess in most of the states.
Even at the PDP governors meeting, it was learnt that the issue of a federal bailout for the states was part of the agenda under discussion. The two meetings are likely to present a common position at the NGF.
The NGF meeting would take place at the Lagos/Osun hall of Transcorp Hilton hotel in Abuja.
