Nigerian Student Goes Viral after Dressing Barbie in High-fashion Muslim Dresses

A Nigerian student, Haneefah Adam, has created an Instagram account that is currently trending because it features popular doll Barbie dressed in various high-fashion but modest Muslim outfits - all complete with a headscarf.

The 24-year-old, who is also launching a modest lifestyle brand called Hanie, designs and sews the Barbie's outfits by herself.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Haneefah said she wanted a doll that inspired young Muslim girls and that the outfits were inspired by the normal every day look of the 'hijabi girl'.
She said:

'I want Hijarbie to inspire the Muslim girl child. It's about having a doll that looks like her, that represents her own cultural and religious background. At the end of the day, it will create a sense of value and will be inspiring them to be more confident, more driven, to believe more in themselves which leads to an appreciation of herself and her modest lifestyle and upbringing.'

Haneefah explained on her Instagram page, @hijarbie, that the dolls weren't yet racially diversified because of the difficulty of finding different types of Barbies in Nigeria.

She said she'd 'love to dress up a black doll' and had placed an order for them to be shipped from overseas - but in the meantime she decided to start with what she had. See more pics below.
