The Inspector-General of police, Solomon Arase has been making a lopsided police promotion, with juniors assuming positions higher than their superiors, a police officer has alleged.
The officer said northerners were being discriminated against both in terms of recruitment and promotion ever since Arase became the IGP, which is capable of undermining discipline in the service.
“We wrote anonymous letters but there was no action. That is why we decided to approach the media so that the world will know. For instance, during the recruitment of serving members, who have degree qualifications, only four were recruited from Zamfara, but in Edo state, about 66 of them were recruited. This is selfishness. If you go and check another list, you will see there is what is called special promotion by the IG. In that promotion, out of 100 percent, northerners only got about five percent,” he said under the condition of anonymity.
He said top deputy commissioners of police, most of which are northerners have been bypassed by their juniors to become police commissioners in states like Kogi and Rivers.
“I don’t know the type of promotion they are talking about. However, the recent promotion exercise was done based on merit. The IG sent some corporals for promotion exams. And just last week, the first batch of successful officers was released.
"After that, there is degree-holding officers’ promotion. But their list is not yet out. We have not completed the promotion exercise. It is still ongoing. Let them wait until the process is complete," she said.

The police officers said, “We have documents about this. For instance, the CP in Kogi (Emma Ojukwu) is a junior, his name is down in the strata, but he was picked and made CP in Kogi. The same happened to the CP in Rivers."
The police officer, in an interview with BBC Hausa monitored on Monday, said several anonymous letters were written to the IGP over the situation, but these had not helped to stop the nepotism in the force.

But spokesperson of the police, Olabisi Kolawole told BBC Hausa that the allegations were baseless since the promotion is still ongoing and is being done on merit.
