N100,000 credit alert lands undergraduate in police net

A 26-year-old undergra-duate, Sunday Akande, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over alleged unlawful detention.

 In a letter through his lawyer F. E. Ojeikere, and copied the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, the petitioner claimed he was arrested and detained for an offence he knew nothing about, saying he was wrongfully arrested by the police after he voluntarily reported a N100,000 transaction paid into his account. The petitioner claimed that sometime in July 2016, he received a credit alert of N100,000 on his First Bank account with a branch on Airport Road Warri, Delta State. According to the petitioner, since he was not expecting such money from anywhere, he felt that the money must have been wrongfully paid into his account.

 He said on same day he went to the bank to bring the development to notify the bank and requested that the money be removed from his account. He claimed the branch manager (names withheld), directed him to write a statement of his complaint, which he did. 

The petitioner lamented that months after having lodged his complaint, the bank still did not remove the money from his account. The victim claimed that on October 24, he went to the bank to transact normal business, but discovered that he could not access his account, noting that he was then directed to see the bank manager. 

The petitioner noted that while he was waiting, the bank manager invited police to arrest him, saying “from there I was taken to Ekpan Police Station at Uvie Local Government Area, where I was detained for three days.” 

His lawyer argued that the petitioner’s fundamental human rights were breached.

50kg bag of rice now N8,000 in Ebonyi – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said that a 50 kg bag of Nigeria rice is now selling in Ebonyi for N8,000. This was disclosed in Bayelsa State by the Acting Director, Corporate Communication, CBN, Mr Isaac Okoroafor.

Speaking at a sensitization workshop for the CBN Anchor programme for farmers, he said:

“We should eat Nigerian rice provided for by the CBN Anchor Programme; 50kg of local rice is now N8,000 in Ebonyi. Already, the Abia Government has ordered rice from Ebonyi for Christmas.”

He said with the Anchor Borrowers Programme for the promotion of Agriculture, Nigeria is set to begin exportation of rice by 2017.

Okorafor said Kebbi had already harvested one million tons of rice, adding that Ebonyi’s harvest had outstripped the earmarked production for the year.

“The development is encouraging and by the end of 2017, we will not only meet our national demand which is between six and seven million tons but have surplus to export. 

“We must rid ourselves of eating foreign rice that has been stored for over nine years in Thailand, Vietnam and India. Nigerian rice is fresh and healthier."

Matheus Saroli, 25, the son of a head coach of the Brazilian football club on board the doomed Colombia-bound flight has revealed that he was supposed to board the plane but couldn't because he had forgotten his passport.

The British Aerospace 146 plane plane, carrying nearly all of the Chapecoense football team, crashed outside the city of Medellin on Monday night killing 75 and leaving just six survivors – including three players.

Following the tragedy, Matheus whose father, Luiz Carlos Saroli, coached the first-division team and also perished in the crash, wrote a post on Facebook explaining that he had been scheduled to board the plane and thanking people for their support.

Mr Saroli wrote:

“Friends, my brother and my mother are all well. We ask that we are given a little privacy, especially to my mother, and thank all of those sending messages.

“I was in [Sao Paulo] today and I did not board because I forgot my passport. We are strong. We will get through it.”

Later on, in an interview with RPC, Mr Saroli described his final conversation with his father, saying something had felt “different”, indicating that he could sense what was to happen. Close to tears, Mr Saroli said:

“I talked to him several times about various things.

“In the end, at the last moment before we separated, and he left for the airport, it was different. It’s easy to say this now, but I felt something was different.”

The Avro RJ85 plane, which was carrying nine crew, suffered power failures while flying through the Antioquia Department on its way from Bolivia. 

The pilot of the flight had dumped fuel in the moments before the plane came down to stop it turning into a fireball on impact, saving the few who were pulled out alive.

Senate condemns Telecoms' Data Tariffs increase, halts New Tariff A

It is with a sigh of relief (especially for us bloggers. Wink wink) that we announce that the Nigerian Senate has halted the planned hike in data price. They agree that it is totally irresponsible of the NCC and condemn it in all entirety.

The Senate has on Wednesday condemned in its totality the increase of data tariffs by the service providers – Telecoms companies in tandem with the Nigerian Communications Commission policies. 

Senate resolved to halt the new tariff approval, mandating the Committee on Communications (NCC) to carry out thorough oversight on the process to ensure that Nigerians are carried along in the process.

"It is very important that we protect the people that brought us here this is the height of irresponsibility by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at this time without any consultation from the statistics it is almost four times the price.” Senate President, Bukola Saraki stated.

The planned data price hike by the federal authorities has continued to generate a lot of hue and cry. Rapper Vector tha Viper has written a scathing open letter to the government.

Dear federal governmemt,

You have come a long way with your policies and rule. You have concerned yourself with nothing but the present hence making it look like the constitution has to be remixed and renamed "Your WILL" before your demise.


You have ignored the children you saw grow and focused on the ones from your sperm cells and ovulation that you aren't seeing grow because they have been shipped off to "better grounds" for education. You have put your wives in other rooms BUT that of importance forgetting (if you married a good woman) they balance you when you go astray.

Lagos Presents N813bn Budget for 2017... biggest ever state budget in Nigeria

Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday presented the 2017 budget proposal of N813 billion to the House of Assembly, assuring that the budget would be judiciously implemented to continue the infrastructural renewal and the enhancement of Lagos as one of the foremost tourism and investment destination in Africa.

Ambode, who tagged the budget “The Golden Jubilee Budget” as it coincides with the State’s 50th Anniversary, said it would focus on physical infrastructure, while social sectors especially health, education, youth and social development would get adequate attention. His words:

“In the course of the 2017 Financial Year, we shall carry out fundamental reforms on all our modes of transportation – Roads, Water and the Walkways. In this wise, a Public Transport Infrastructure Bond will be issued in the course of the year.

“The State Government will embark on the Urbanisation of the Marina axis, Waterways Channelization, establishment of more Parks and Gardens as well as the Community Sports Centres and Stadiums in different locations across the State.”

Giving the key components of the budget, Governor Ambode said recurrent expenditure would take N300.535 billion while N512.464 billion would be dedicated to capital expenditure, representing a Capital/Recurrent ratio of 63 percent capital to 37 percent recurrent.

The governor said road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance would be one of the key focuses of the budget, adding that efforts would be geared towards roads that will open up the hinterlands, improve connectivity in the State and reduce travel time.

The 2017 budget saw an increase by N150 billion from the 2016 budget.

The budget is the biggest for any Nigerian state ever.

Prostitutes have taken over my area, Abuja Chief laments

The leader of Utako Community, Abuja, Alhaji Abdullahi Isha, has cried out to the police over the influx of s*x hawkers into the community.

The worried man also lamented that the presence of the ladies of easy virtues had attracted men of shady characters to the area.

Alhaji Isah, who said this during the Federal Capital Territory Eminent Persons Forum organised by the police on Tuesday in Abuja, called on the FCT Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, to come to the rescue of his community.

He expressed displeasure over the activities of the s*x hawkers and pleaded with police authorities to deploy personnel to the community to arrest the development and restore sanity to the area.

He said, “I want to call the attention of the Commissioner of Police to the activities of prostitutes who have taken over my community. Their population in the community has increased in recent times and they are also attracting criminal elements. We want the police to come and address the situation before things get out of hand.”

Speaking to Awoko at her residence she explained that some time last year she went on a fishing expedition together with her grand mother and other women in the town. After the exercise she started experiencing her breast becoming large. 


While taking bath together with the elders in the stream one of the women spoke about her breast saying her breast is becoming abnormal and it is not a good thing for her.

During the night hour she said her breast scratched throughout the night giving her sleepless night and it’s kept projecting up to the current length as she continue to scratch.

The following morning when she went to school her class and school mates were provoking her and there after she stopped going to school almost a year now. She started her schooling at the Ansarul Primary School from classes 1 to 3 and then continued to Roman Catholic Primary School from classes 4 to 5.

She maintained that her parents have sought medical attention at Nixon Memorial hospital at Segbwema and several herbalists within the community but no improvement.

Since the start of her trouble she is always at home sometimes either crying or sleeping. She described her breast as a big load on her adding she does not know why God put such punishment on her.

Her grand father Saidu Moriba said this is the first time he is seeing such wonder in his life time, and that they are baffled as what to do to save her from this trouble. He revealed that several prayers and sacrifices have been done on her behalf but the problem still remains and they are asking for assistance.

HIV Patients Storm Conference Venue, Protest Poor Funding

Some protesters under the aegis of Society for Women and Children Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (SOWCHAN) on Tuesday invaded the Abuja venue of the first National Conference on HIV Prevention in Nigeria.

They were protesting against the poor attitude of the Federal Government towards the funding of the HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

The group also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint one of the people living with HIV/AIDS to an office to be created by the government.

The office, SOWCHAN said, should be known as Office of the Special Adviser to the President on HIV/AIDS.


“That is the person who will be providing the President with true situation on HIV response,” the protesters said.

The conference, with the theme, ‘Hands-on for HIV Prevention,’ organised by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, and other local and international organisations, seeks to proffer further solutions to tackling the disease.

The members of SOWCHAN, who trooped out in scores, ran towards a podium where the Minister of State for Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, was billed to deliver a keynote address and almost disrupted his speech.

The spokesperson for the organisation, Mrs. Enya Attah, who has lived with the HIV/AIDS for 20 years and has three of her children negative to the disease, said the protest was “a wake-up call on the government to take full ownership of HIV funding.”

“There should be political will by both the federal and state governments to truthfully implement the many strategic plans and research recommendation developed by NACA. Nigeria is heavily dependent on external donor to about 75 per cent, while domestic financing is 25 percent. There is dwindling global funding for HIV in developing countries; the Nigerian government must bridge this funding gap”, Attah said.

The Director-General, Dr Sani Aliyu, said at the event the use of antiretroviral therapy had proven to prevent transmission of HIV virus by 96 per cent.

He said, “Following the 2011 landmark HTPN-O52 study, we now have very good evidence that ART is very effective in cutting HIV transmission by up to 96 per cent. In addition to this, pregnant women who could take antiretroviral treatment and adhere to treatment up till post-partum period are able to reduce the risk of transmission from as high as 30 per cent to less than one per cent.

“This conference is an opportunity for us to review our approach to HIV prevention and learn from all the good work that has been going on from within and outside the country.”

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on AIDS, TB and Malaria, David Mbugadu, urged private institutions in the country to assist by pooling resources together to help HIV/AIDS patients in the country.

He said, “Dwindling revenues to the government coffers might impede government’s capacity to ensure that over three million HIV positive persons in the country are placed on drugs.”

Michelle is too sensible to want to be in politics, she will never run for office- Obama

We all know that there are various social media campaigns backing Michelle Obama for president in 2020, saying she would make a first female president.

Well, her husband has said she will never run for office.

In a recently released interview, Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner asked President Obama about his wife possibly entering politics; Obama respondedby saying,

"Michelle will never run for office. She is as talented a person as I know. You can see the incredible resonance she has with the American people. But I joke that she's too sensible to want to be in politics."

He gave a similar response on the radio show 'Sway in the Morning' last month, also adding,

"Michelle does not have the patience or the inclination to actually be a candidate herself. That's one thing y'all can take to the bank."

David Axelrod, Obama's chief campaign strategist during both his presidential runs, also echoed that sentiment in October when he said about the first lady running for office,

"I would bet everything that I own against that prospect."
