The Abia State governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in the last general election, Dr. Alex Otti, allegedly escaped an attempt on his life at his Maitama, Abuja lodge on Friday morning.
Narrating the incident to newsmen in Umuahia, Otti said that around 2a.m on Friday, he received information that his guest house in Abuja had been attacked by yet to be identified persons. Otti said he had left Abuja the previous day to enable him attend the tribunal sitting in Umuahia where he is seeking to reclaim what he said was his victory at the election.
According to Otti, the suspected assassins came in through the back gate, after cutting the protective wire mesh of the house, and scaling the fence. The assassins, he said went straight to his room, after shooting and killing a police officer on guard at the lodge.
"I thought I should let the public know about the threat. If I had spent the day in Abuja, God forbid, who knows what the story would have been", he said According to him, the suspects ransacked the entire lodge.
He disclosed that Police authorities in Abuja had stepped into the matter adding that he is awaiting the outcome of their investigation. "It is very clear that it is an assassination attempt on my life, but the God I serve had made it impossible for them to get me", he said.
Otti said he could not pin-point any suspect but would be waiting for the outcome of police investigation, stating however that there had been threats to his life from "left, right and centre".
Otti said he was speaking out for authorities in Nigeria to know what to do, and “very importantly to investigate and know who are involved”.
