Army Arrests Local Govt Chairman for Links to Boko Haram

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of the chairman of Mafa Local Government Area of Borno, Shettima Lawan, for his alleged link with Boko Haram.

Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, confirmed the arrest of the council chairman during a news conference at the 7 Division headquarters in Maiduguri.
Confirming the development, the Major General said, “All I can say is that the chairman is a big supporter of Boko Haram.”
“We heard that he harboured Boko Haram members along with his father. He kept the Boko Haram members because the father begged him to do so.

“The chairman was in the habit of accommodating people that had fled from the bush.”

The same chairman sometimes also followed hunters into the bush, claiming to be hunting for the Boko Haram members. So, a lot of people are still confused about his role in the saga.

The Borno state government said they are waiting for more investigation by the security agencies.
