The family of acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election late Chief Moshood Abiola has said they supported President–elect General Muhammadu Buhari, to be the next leader of the country because of their conviction about his ability to govern effectively and right injustice in the country.
The family, who disclosed this when the APC senator-elect for Kaduna North senatorial district, Shehu Sani paid a courtesy visit to the Abiola family home in Lagos, noted that the fortunes of the country took a nose dive because of inefficient leadership under PDP government.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mrs. Hafsat Abiola-Costello flanked by Mr. Jamiu Abiola said Nigerians does not deserve the kind of leadership they had witnessed under Goodluck Jonathan.
She said, “We felt this was really our last chance to get it right. Even though we have been able to ensure that General Buhari takes office May 29 as the next president I still feel it is not yet time for us to do a victory dance. There are still a lot of questions we need to answer and one of those questions is who would constitute the team?”
She said politicians must be ready to make sacrifices by cutting their bogus allowances, “ because our politicians cannot be so overwhelmingly rich in a country where others are so overwhelmingly poor. It cannot work.”
Abiola-Costello who likened General Buhari’s victory to the mandate given to her late father who lost his life while trying to reclaim his mandate added that, “This election is very much like what we saw in 1993 presidential election, when Nigerians looked beyond ethnicity and looked beyond religion and chose MKO Abiola.
“So when Nigerians show that they have that maturity, it talks about leadership and people getting the kind of leader they deserve. It shows that Nigerians are trying to tell the world that we deserve more than what they had seen.”
