The United States Embassy in Nigeria has alleged that the outcomes of the just concluded governorship elections in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states are not the true wishes of the Nigerians in those areas as there were confirmed widespread violence and electoral malpractices.
In a press statement released on Monday, the American embassy stated that the elections held in both states were inundated with fraud and violence.
"We have seen the reports of violence and alleged irregularities, particularly in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states,"
the statement added, calling on aggrieved parties "to pursue their grievances peacefully in the judicial arena".
While commending President Goodluck Jonathan and the President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari, the embassy said it regrets any loss of life and destruction of property.
"We commend the leadership of Nigeria’s political parties, notably President Goodluck Jonathan and President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, for urging their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the electoral process".
Sources say the American government is not happy with the sham in Rivers and Akwa Ibom.
